Begin with foods you enjoy

For Daniel, Greek-Australian family food is tied to markets, conversation and meals that bring people together. That experience is an invitation to enjoy food, not a requirement to recreate someone else’s table.

Start with familiar ingredients. Seasonal vegetables, beans, bread, yoghurt, herbs and olive oil can offer plenty of possibilities, depending on your preferences and dietary needs. Choose a few that you already like and know how to use.

Think in combinations

A flexible meal can start with something you have already prepared. Pair roast vegetables with a familiar protein food, turn leftovers into a lunch bowl or put a few shared dishes on the table.

Keep preparation realistic. Tinned beans, frozen vegetables and other convenient ingredients have a place alongside fresh produce. A meal does not need to be made entirely from scratch to be worth enjoying.

Leave space for the people

If you enjoy sharing food, include that in your plans. A regular dinner with friends or family might be something you want to organise the rest of the week around.

Choose ingredients and recipes that suit your own culture, budget and tastes. You can borrow ideas from Mediterranean cooking without changing every meal you eat.
